Status on 26 October 2026
Upcoming. No page from LA28's own site turned up in the research, so the fencing dates and venue below rest on NBC's reporting of the LA28 schedule, a secondary source. The events, places and qualification rules come from the FIE's LA28 Qualification System (version of 12 May 2026, read from a copy hosted by the Dutch Olympic committee, NOC*NSF) and from the IPC.
Olympic fencing
When and where
NBC Olympics gives the fencing dates as 15 to 23 July 2028, at Hall 1 of the Los Angeles Convention Center downtown, which it says seats 7,000 and will also host taekwondo, wheelchair fencing and para taekwondo. A fencing guide gives the same dates, citing NBC and LA28, and calls them preliminary. NBC Los Angeles, reading the LA28 competition schedule published in November 2025, lists women's individual epee on day 1, 15 July 2028, the day after the Opening Ceremony on 14 July.
Events and places
The FIE's Organisation Rules (August 2026) say the Olympic fencing programme currently has twelve events and that any change needs the FIE Congress's approval (o.43). The LA28 Qualification System sets them out as six men's and six women's events, individual and team, in foil, epee and sabre, with 212 places in all: 204 quota places split 102 men and 102 women, plus 6 places for the host country and 2 universality places. The FIE Congress approved the system on 22 November 2025.
- Each national Olympic committee may enter at most nine athletes per sex and one team of three per team event (B.2).
- Each individual event will have between 34 and 37 fencers: 10 qualified individually plus the 24 members of the eight qualified teams, with host and universality places varying the total, never above 37 (B.3).
- Eligibility refers to the Olympic Charter, the IOC Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women's) Category, the World Anti-Doping Code and the FIE's minimum age in o.29.1 (section C).
How teams qualify
Each team event has eight teams, 48 teams and 144 places in all. They are chosen on the FIE Official Senior Team Ranking of 1 April 2028, which covers results from 1 April 2027 to 1 April 2028: the top four teams in each event, then the best-ranked team from each of four FIE zones (Africa, the Americas, Asia-Oceania and Europe) among the teams ranked 5th to 24th (D.1). The 2027 World Championships in Tashkent fall inside that window, and Kursiv Uzbekistan reported in 2024 that points earned there will count towards LA28 eligibility. The season leading into it is on the 2026-27 season.
The FIE Executive Committee appointed Arno Perillier Schneider (Brazil) and Janet Huggins (Great Britain) as the FIE's Technical Delegates for LA28 fencing (FIE Information Letter 6-26, 14 April 2026).
Russian and Belarusian athletes. No IOC decision on Russian or Belarusian participation at LA28 itself was found. The FIE's 2026 decision lifting its protective measures covers FIE events only; it and the IOC's dated decisions of May and July 2026 are set out on World Championships 2026.
Paralympic wheelchair fencing
The IPC confirmed on 3 June 2025 that LA28 will have 16 wheelchair fencing medal events: 7 for men, 7 for women and 2 mixed or open. Compared with Paris 2024 that is one fewer men's event, one fewer women's event and two more mixed events. The athlete quota is 96, 48 men and 48 women, the same as at Paris. The Paralympic Games run from 15 to 27 August 2028, per the IPC, and NBC says wheelchair fencing will use the same convention center hall as Olympic fencing.
A fencing guide citing World Para Fencing names the two mixed events as mixed team epee and mixed team foil; no IPC or World Para Fencing list was found to confirm that. British Fencing described the Para Fencing European Championships in Cardiff in October 2026 as the first European-based LA28 qualification event. More is on wheelchair fencing 2026.

After LA28. As of 27 May 2026, the Associated Press reported, the IOC had not confirmed the sports list for Brisbane 2032, and no source found confirms fencing's place or events there. The Paralympic results from Paris 2024 are on wheelchair fencing 2026, and the programmes themselves are explained on the Olympic and Paralympic programme.
