Status on 26 October 2026
Finished. The 2026 senior World Championships were held from 22 to 30 July 2026 at AsiaWorld-Expo, beside Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau, using two halls, AsiaWorld-Arena and AsiaWorld-Summit, according to the FIE's press kit. The FIE described 12 individual and team events across the three weapons and gave its own estimate of more than 1,000 athletes from more than 100 nations. The kit's welcome message is signed by Abdelmoneim ElHusseiny as the FIE's interim president.
The FIE counts Hong Kong as the 85th senior World Championships, including the 14 editions of 1921 to 1936 that were given the status afterwards, and the first hosted by Hong Kong, China. It says this was the fourth time an Asian federation hosted World Championship events, after Seoul 1999, Beijing 2008 (men's team foil and women's team epee only) and Wuxi 2018.
About the sources. The FIE's results pages could not be read for this research, so no result below comes directly from the FIE. Most individual medallists come from the European Fencing Confederation (EFC), a continental body affiliated to the FIE, in its report of 28 July 2026. Other results come from governments and press reports, named in each row. Where only one press report gives a result, it is marked unconfirmed.
Schedule and format
The press kit published this schedule, marked as subject to change. Individual pools and preliminary tables ran from 22 to 24 July.
| Date | Finals |
|---|---|
| 25 July 2026 | Men's foil and women's epee, individual |
| 26 July 2026 | Men's epee and women's sabre, individual |
| 27 July 2026 | Men's sabre and women's foil, individual |
| 28 July 2026 | Men's foil and women's epee, team |
| 29 July 2026 | Men's epee and women's sabre, team |
| 30 July 2026 | Men's sabre and women's foil, team |
As the press kit describes it, each individual event opened with a qualifying round of pools. The 16 top-seeded fencers went straight into the main table of 64, and the rest were seeded into a preliminary direct-elimination round from which 32 more qualified. How pools and tables work is explained on bouts and formats.
Russian and Belarusian athletes
These are the governing bodies' own dated decisions, as far as the research could read them:
- FIE, 1 May 2025: the FIE named a group to review the eligibility of Russian and Belarusian passport holders (FIE Information Letter 7-25).
- IOC, 7 May 2026: the IOC Executive Board said it no longer recommended restrictions on Belarusian athletes, teams included, in competitions run by international federations, and kept its restrictions on Russian athletes at that date. The IOC's site timed out, so this rests on a search-result extract of its release.
- FIE, late May or early June 2026: the FIE Executive Committee decided that from these World Championships onward its protective measures were lifted, and that athletes and officials holding Russian or Belarusian passports could take part in all FIE individual and team events under their national acronyms, uniforms, flags and anthems, citing the Olympic Charter's principles of non-discrimination, equal treatment and universality. The wording comes from a search-result extract of the FIE's article, whose page did not render. The date is given two ways: a search-result extract of FIE Information Letter 8-26 gives 29 May 2026, while press reports date the announcement 2 June 2026. Both may be right, one the decision and one its publication, but that is not confirmed.
- IOC, July 2026: an IOC release titled as provisionally lifting the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, and saying its recommendations to international federations on Russian athletes no longer applied, exists on the IOC's site. Its body was not read; press reports date the Executive Board decision 7 July 2026, which is unconfirmed.
In the results below, a fencer's country is given as the source gives it.
Individual results
| Event | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men's foil | Alexandr Choupenitch (Czechia) | Filippo Macchi (Italy) | Daniel Dosa (Hungary); second bronze missing | EFC |
| Women's foil | Martina Favaretto (Italy) | Arianna Errigo (Italy) | Alina Poloziuk (Ukraine); second bronze missing | EFC |
| Men's epee | Lucas Malcotti (Switzerland) | Davide Di Veroli (Italy) | Both bronzes missing | EFC |
| Women's epee | Song Sera (Korea), unconfirmed | Giulia Rizzi (Italy) | Barbara Brych (France); second bronze missing | Gold: one press report; others: EFC |
| Men's sabre | Pavel Graudyn (Russia) | Do Gyeong-dong (Korea), unconfirmed | Radu Nitu (Romania); second bronze missing | EFC and TASS; silver: TASS only |
| Women's sabre | Larissa Eifler (Germany) | Sara Balzer (France) | Sugar Katinka Battai (Hungary) and Toscane Tori (see below) | EFC |
- Men's foil: the Consulate General of Hungary in Hong Kong also reports Daniel Dosa's bronze.
- Women's epee: the gold rests on one Korean press report, CBS NoCut News of 26 July 2026, which says Song Sera beat Giulia Rizzi 9-8 in the final on 25 July. The EFC lists Rizzi as silver, which fits, but the gold is unconfirmed against the FIE.
- Men's sabre: TASS reported on 27 July 2026 that Graudyn beat Do Gyeong-dong 15-7 in the final and that he competed under the Russian flag with the anthem played. The EFC also lists Graudyn as champion, under Russia. The silver rests on TASS alone.
- Women's sabre, Toscane Tori: the EFC's Hong Kong report lists her under Switzerland, while the EFC's own reports from the European Championships in June place her in the French team. The two EFC reports disagree, and the research did not settle it.
The EFC says European fencers won five of the six individual titles and 16 of the 24 individual medals.

- Men's team foil: the HKSAR Government's Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism congratulated the team on 28 July 2026 on what the release called Hong Kong's first team silver at a World Championships. ANSA's headline of the same day reports both Italian team titles of that day.
- Men's team epee: The Middle East Observer reported on 30 July 2026 that Egypt won bronze by beating Israel 39-38 on a deciding hit, after losing its semi-final to Kazakhstan. No second source was found.
- Men's team sabre: the gold and the 45-31 final score come from a French sports blog. A Romanian report, read only as a search-result extract, says Romania beat Hungary 45-39 for bronze after losing 45-44 to Korea in the semi-final, with Korea and France the finalists. Both reports agree on the two finalists.
- Women's team sabre: the Consulate General of Hungary describes the title as Hungary's third in a row in the event.
ANSA reported on 30 July 2026 that Italy finished top of the medal table with eight medals: four golds (women's individual foil, men's team foil, women's team epee and women's team foil) and four silvers. The FIE's own medal table was not read, so the tally rests on ANSA.
The 2025 edition
The FIE press kit says all six individual champions at Tbilisi 2025 won their event for the first time, among them Ryan Choi Chun Yin in men's foil, Hong Kong's first world title. It also says Individual Neutral Athletes won three medals there, one gold, counted separately from Russia's totals.
What is missing
Besides the medallists marked missing in the tables, the research could not read the FIE's own results to check each row, above all those resting on one press report, nor the FIE's official medal table or the full text of its decision on Russian and Belarusian athletes.
The season around these Championships is on the 2025-26 season, and the next World Championships, in Tashkent in July 2027, on the 2026-27 season. No prize money is given.
