Wheelchair fencing

Wheelchair fencing in 2026: what was held, what was found, and what comes next.

Wheelchair fencing's 2026 season had World Cups, a European Championships in Cardiff and the Asian Para Games, but no World Championships was found for the year. Results were hard to confirm, and this page says plainly where they rest on one report. Categories are separate events and are never merged.

Status on 26 October 2026

No wheelchair fencing World Championships was found for 2026. The 2026 World Cup circuit, the Para Fencing European Championships in Cardiff (6 to 11 October 2026) and the wheelchair fencing at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya (October 2026) are all finished. The next World Championships found is listed for Hong Kong in November 2027.

About the sources. No 2026 results page from World Para Fencing or World Abilitysport was read. Most results below come from search-result extracts of press and university sport news pages that could not be opened, so they are marked unconfirmed. Where a result was not found, the page says so.

Who runs it, and how the categories work

The international federation for wheelchair fencing took the name World Para Fencing from 2025, as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) reported on 15 January 2025; World Abilitysport's website lists wheelchair fencing in its international federation section and links to a separate World Para Fencing site. USA Fencing's page for the 2026 Bradenton World Cup names the sanctioning body as World Para Fencing, also called World Abilitysport.

Fencers compete by category. Under the IWAS Classification Rules of November 2016, category A covers classes 3 and 4, category B class 2, and category C classes 1A and 1B. British Fencing says (page last updated August 2023) that only categories A and B compete at the Paralympic Games, while World Cup and Satellite events include all three. Each category is a separate event, and results below name it. The newest wheelchair technical rules found are the IWAS rules of January 2018; how they differ from the FIE's rules is on wheelchair fencing.

World Cups, 2026

Budapest, March 2026. A university sport news page, seen only as a search-result extract, described this as the second para World Cup of 2026 and reported that Dimitri Coutya (Great Britain) won all three of his individual category B events and Piers Gilliver (Great Britain) won category A epee. Unconfirmed.

Bradenton, Florida, United States, May 2026. USA Fencing's event page places it at IMG Academy, with individual men's and women's events from 27 to 29 May 2026 and open team events in foil, epee and sabre on 30 May, for categories A and B. A search summary of the same page gave 26 to 29 May in its header; the page as fetched and USA Fencing's announcement of June 2025 give 27 to 30 May. Results as two reports give them (that university sport news page and the Thai newspaper Thairath), both seen only as search-result extracts and so unconfirmed:

Event, as reportedWinner
Category B foilDimitri Coutya (Great Britain), beating Chitipat Charoenta (Thailand) in the final
Category B epeeDimitri Coutya (Great Britain)
Category A epeeEmanuele Lambertini (Italy)
Women's category B epeeSaisunee Jana (Thailand)

The university sport report said the Bradenton wins took Coutya's World Cup gold count for the 2026 season to six.

Pattaya, Thailand, 30 August to 2 September 2026. A World Cup stage on these dates appears in one search-result extract whose page did not load; no results from it are given here. The first World Cup of 2026 and any stops after Pattaya were not identified from a primary source.

Para Fencing European Championships, Cardiff

Held in Cardiff, Wales, from 6 to 11 October 2026, per British Fencing's event page. British Fencing said in June 2025 that World Abilitysport had awarded it the hosting, in partnership with UK Sport, and described the event as the first European-based qualification event for the LA28 Paralympic Games. The event is finished, but no results were found for this research.

Asian Para Games, Aichi-Nagoya

The 2026 Asian Para Games ran from 18 to 24 October 2026, with wheelchair fencing scheduled for 19 to 24 October at Nagoya City Inae Sports Center, according to search-result extracts of the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee's and the Iranian NPC's pages. The one result found is a bronze: The Standard reported that Alison Yu Chui-yee (Hong Kong, China) took bronze in women's individual foil category A after losing her semi-final 15-9 to Zou Xufeng (China), with no bout for third place. That report was also seen only as an extract, so it is unconfirmed. No gold medallist was found.

Still to come

  • World Para Fencing Championships 2027: Hong Kong, China, November 2027, per British Fencing's events page, with no dates given. One source, unconfirmed.
  • LA28 Paralympic Games, 15 to 27 August 2028: 16 wheelchair fencing medal events and 96 athlete places, as the IPC confirmed on 3 June 2025. Details are on LA28.

The research found no 2026 statement from World Para Fencing or World Abilitysport on Russian or Belarusian para fencers, so none is given here.

Paris 2024 Paralympic results, for reference

Wheelchair fencing at Paris 2024 was held at the Grand Palais from 3 to 7 September 2024, with 97 competitors from 22 nations, according to Wikipedia. The IPC's own results archive gives the top five of the medal table as China (10 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze), Thailand (3, 1, 1), Great Britain (2, 3, 1), Germany (1, 0, 0) and Poland (0, 2, 1). The medallists below are from Wikipedia; its 16 golds match the IPC's gold counts exactly.
