Participation

How many people fence, as each body claims it.

No body publishes a count of how many people fence worldwide. What exists are membership figures from national federations, each counting its own members in its own way on its own date. This page gives each figure as its source states it. They are not comparable and should not be added together.

Get coaching

This page explains what governing bodies, standards bodies and researchers publish. It is not a substitute for lessons from a qualified coach, for a qualified armourer's checks or for medical advice.

Read these numbers carefully

A national federation's membership count measures people who joined that federation, on the date it counted them. It does not include people who fence without joining, and federations count differently: some report members, some licence holders, some clubs. None of the figures below is a census, and no governing body was found to publish a worldwide total of fencers. Each figure is the named body's own claim on the stated date.

The FIE: how many countries

The FIE's About page, read on 26 October 2026, claims 156 affiliated member federations, and Olympedia gives 156 as of January 2026. Wikipedia gives 155 as of 2023, and British Fencing says "over 150". The FIE Congress of 22 November 2025 expelled the Mexican federation, and whether the 156 reflects that is not known. At that Congress 139 federations took part, 123 in person and 16 by proxy. More on the FIE and national bodies page.

USA Fencing

Reuters reported in August 2026 that USA Fencing is aiming for 70,000 members before the LA28 Games, repeating the 45,157 members and 752 clubs from the federation's own report. The target is the federation's ambition, not a count.

British Fencing over four years

British Fencing's 2024-25 Annual Report gives a series for individual membership at the end of March each year:

End of MarchIndividual members
202210,092
202310,939
202411,312
202511,645

The same report records a peak of 11,796 members in November 2024. Club numbers moved the other way: 393 affiliated clubs at the end of March 2025, down from 403 a year earlier.

Canada: two club counts

The Canadian Fencing Federation's undated history page speaks of ten provincial associations and eighty local clubs. A search-result extract of a later federation overview gave ten provincial and two territorial associations and "just over 100" clubs. That page was not opened, so the later figure is unconfirmed, and the two cannot be reconciled from what was read.

Wheelchair fencing

British Fencing says wheelchair fencing is practised in 73 countries (page last updated 18 August 2023). It is a single source and could not be checked against World Para Fencing or the IPC.

The Games as a measure of scale

Olympic and Paralympic places are set by quota. Wikipedia records 212 fencers at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The FIE's LA28 Qualification System (version of 12 May 2026) allows 212 fencing places in total, including host-country and universality places. The IPC's LA28 Paralympic programme (3 June 2025) sets a wheelchair fencing quota of 96 athletes, 48 male and 48 female, unchanged from Paris 2024. See the Olympic and Paralympic programme.

What is missing

No figure was found from a governing body for the total number of fencers worldwide, and membership figures were collected only for the four national bodies above.
